'Everything should be done to get Brexit deal',says German Chancellor Merkel

Everything should be done to reach a post-Brexit trade deal between the United Kingdom and the European Union, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said at a news conference on Sunday.

"Any opportunity to reach a result is most welcome," Merkel said.

Asked how she would deal with being labelled in British media as the one who caused a hard Brexit should negotiations fail, Merkel replied that she has not negotiated at all, pointing out that the EU's negotiating team has negotiated for everyone.

If the legal situation between Great Britain and the European Union continues to diverge, it is important that there are fair competitive conditions, she added.
