The General Secretary of a prominent teacher's union in France has condemned the brutal killing on Friday of a history teacher.

The history teacher, who had worked at College du Bois d'Aulne in the Paris suburb of Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, was decapitated by an attacker who police on Saturday confirmed to be an 18-year-old Chechen.

Speaking in Paris, Catherine Nave-Bekhti, CFDT National Education Union General Secretary, said the teaching community was shocked by the assassination and stood in full solidarity with the school.

France’s anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office said that authorities investigating the horrific killing of the man have also arrested nine suspects, including the grandparents, parents and 17-year-old brother of the attacker.

The teacher had discussed caricatures of Islam’s Prophet Muhammad with his class, authorities said.
