Health workers in one of Athens' major hospitals, held a protest on the grounds of the facility, demanding more health workers and extra intensive care beds.

The demonstration at the Evangelismos hospital came as Greece recorded a new surge in COVID-19 infections, nearly half of which were in the greater Athens region where hospital intensive care units remain full.

Health authorities on Tuesday reported 4,340 new confirmed infections over the past 24 hours, bringing the total to more than 260,000.

It was the highest number of new daily infections since December.

Another 72 deaths were recorded, with the overall death toll at 8,017 in the country of 10.5 million.

In total, 1.6 million coronavirus vaccine doses have been administered in the nation.
