Spanish police played hide and seek with illegal partygoers in Madrid this weekend, with officers going to great lengths to catch up with the culprits.

Police released a video showing officers finding revellers hiding under beds and inside wardrobes.

Local residents called the police when they realized that a tourist apartment was being used for a party in defiance of lockdown restrictions.

44 people received a fine, according to police.

Overall, local police broke up a total of 227 gatherings over Friday and Saturday.

Authorities have seen a surge of weekend parties in the last few months as people defy strict regulations on the maximum number of people allowed to meet together.

The central Madrid area of Las Letras, with its heavy concentration of bars, discos and tourist apartments, has seen the highest number of police raids.
