Meghalaya Shawl to vases with Bidri work: What PM Modi gifted to Greek Prez, PM & spouse

In a gesture of cultural diplomacy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi gifted a traditional 'Dokra' art piece and an exquisite Meghalaya shawl to Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and his wife Mareva Grabowski-Mitsotakis during his one-day state visit to Athens.

Arriving from South Africa where he attended the 15th BRICS Summit, PM Modi engaged in comprehensive discussions with his Greek counterpart Mitsotakis.

As part of the diplomatic exchange, an intricate Dokra artwork, a peacock-shaped boat, was presented to Mitsotakis. The official statement highlighted Dokra art's significance, tracing it back to ancient history with artifacts like the Mohenjo-Daro dancing girl.

The craft, named after the 'Dhokar Damar' tribe, boasts motifs of Hindu deities, goddesses, and animals, crafted using the intricate lost-wax casting method. The presented piece was a creation of artisans from Chattisgarh, showcasing the enduring practice of this metal casting technique.

Additionally, a finely woven traditional shawl from Meghalaya was gifted to Greek Prime Minister’s wife, Mareva Grabowski-Mitsotakis. The statement emphasized the shawls' regal heritage, originally donned by Khasi and Jaintia royalty for ceremonial and festive occasions. The shawls were noted for their symbolic animal and floral motifs, reflecting power, beauty, and grace.

In a gesture bridging two ancient civilisations, PM Modi handed over a pair of exquisite vases adorned with Bidri work from Telangana was gifted to the President of Greece.
