The residents of Moria village in Lesbos have expressed relief that a new camp is being built somewhere else after fires gutted the nearby migrant camp in the midst of a coronavirus lockdown earlier in the week.

After five years with Greece's largest refugee camp at its doorstep, the village has had a tense coexistence with the migrants located less than 600 metres away.

The Moria camp was built to house around 2,750 but overcrowding led to more than 12,500 people living in squalor, who have now been left homeless by the blazes on Tuesday and Wednesday.

On Sunday, village residents Petros Bracoulas and Makis Kouklaras said they want the camp to be closed for good.

A new closed facility is being built by the Greek army at a former artillery range 4 km down the road from Moria.
