Romania introduced a nationwide curfew and will close all schools for 30 days from Monday following a recent surge in coronavirus cases. The country's number of daily new infections has doubled in the past two weeks, the government said on Friday.

People will only be permitted to leave their homes between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. for medical emergencies, to buy medicine or to care for a child or an elderly person.

Workers commuting after the curfew will be required to show either a work ID card or a letter from their employer to police if asked, said Romanian Police spokesperson, Georgian Dragan on Sunday. As of Sunday Romania had recorded 303,751 cases of the coronavirus, including 7,879 deaths.
