A plane carrying 100,000 doses of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine landed late Sunday at Belgrade airport.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Russia's ambassador to Serbia, Aleksandr Botsan-Kharchenko, were present on the tarmac to oversee the arrival.

Serbia has received 293,000 doses of the Russian COVID-19 vaccine so far, and Vucic thanked Moscow during brief remarks following the event.

Most Serbian citizens have received the Chinese Sinopharm vaccines, followed by Russia's Sputnik V, Pfizer-BioNTech and Oxford-AstraZeneca.

Serbia's populist government has close relations with both China and Russia, while formally seeking European Union membership.

The state RTS television on Sunday reported that government data showed that a total of 1,436,498 jabs have been administered.
