Spanish FM on Morocco-Israel ties, Trump on WSahara

Spanish Foreign Minister Arancha González Laya welcomed the announcement that Morocco and Israel would be normalising ties, but rejected US President Donald Trump's recognition of Western Sahara as part of Moroccan territory.

Spanish Foreign Minister Arancha González Laya welcomed the announcement that Morocco and Israel would be normalising ties, but rejected US President Donald Trump's recognition of Western Sahara as part of Moroccan territory.

Spain's diplomatic chief the country's position during a visit to the Palestinian city of Ramallah on Thursday.

Spain was the occupying power in Western Sahara until 1975, when the country relinquished administrative control to a joint administration by Morocco and Mauritania.

The country maintains close ties with the Saharawi people and many activists have studied in Spain over the years.
