A bookstore in Lima is using a challenge from the smash-hit Netflix survival drama Squid Game to attract more readers.

The South Korean-made TV show about desperate adults competing in deadly children's games for a chance to escape severe debt has become a worldwide success.

One of its challenges sees contestants cutting the shape of a dalgona cookie from honeycomb without letting it break or crumble.

The Ciudad Librera bookstore in Lima was giving out free books to those who could complete their recreation of the task.

"I think that Ciudad Librera, through these innovative ideas, promotes reading and encourages the enjoyment of it (reading) in children, young people and adolescents who are into Squid Game," customer and participant Angie Ferrer said.

Squid Game has become Netflix's biggest original series launch after reaching some 111 million fans, including many in Peru.

"We believe it's a great way to attract people with this activity, so they can get closer to our bookstore, to books," said Chrisel Arquigeño, the manager of Ciudad Librera.

Ciudad Librera is a cultural establishment that has bookstores in several districts of the city of Lima.

It seeks to promote reading through the lending and purchasing of books.
