Germany To Deny Citizenship To Those Engaging In Pro-Palestinian Slogans Under New Law
Under the revised law, Germany may deny citizenship to people, who share and engage in pro-Palestinian slogans.
New Delhi: As Germany’s new citizenship law comes into effect, the process to obtain citizenship for those, who post and support slogans like ‘From the River to the Sea’ on social media linked to extending support for Palestine, may become difficult. Under the revised law, Germany may deny citizenship to such people, who share and engage in pro-Palestinian slogans. As per reports, the new citizenship law in Germany has imposed strict provisions for the naturalisation process in a bid to tackle rising antisemitism and racism in the country.
According to the reports, the amendment in the law also allows foreign nationals, who are employed in Germany, to apply for citizenship after five years instead of eight years. Furthermore, a specific clause in the new law explains that anyone who violates this commitment, such as denying the Holocaust or promoting violence against Israel, will be ineligible for citizenship, a foreign media reported.
Experts feel that the fresh development in Germany, in the wake of the ongoing tension in the Middle East, has pointed at the nation’s stance over the war. They also speculate that such change on one hand aims to expedite the naturalisation process, it also emphasises a commitment to democratic values and historical responsibility towards Jewish life.
German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said, “If you don’t share our values, you can’t get a German passport.” As per reports, German law incorporates questions about antisemitism and Jewish life into the citizenship test to ensure applicants understand and respect these values.
