American forces on Tuesday stopped a Russian convoy in Syria from reaching the Smelka crossing on the border with Iraq, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Four U.S. armoured vehicles intercepted the Russian vehicles on the al-Malakiya-Maabadah highway in the country's northeast, closing parts of the road and causing traffic congestion.

US troops reportedly escorted the Russian convoy back to the main road before they continued on back to the Qamishli airbase.

Another incident earlier this week saw U.S. troops in Eastern Syria block Russian soldiers from advancing towards the Rumailan oilfields.
