Heatwave engulfs southern Spain

Spain is experiencing its first summer heatwave as warmer air from Africa engulfs parts of the country, causing temperatures to exceed 44 degrees Celsius (111 degrees Fahrenheit).

In the south of the country in Andalusia's Guadalquivir Valley, temperatures could rise even higher and reach a sweltering 47 degrees (116 degrees Fahrenheit), according to forecasts from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).

The historic city of Cordoba is known for its intense heat.

On Sunday locals and tourists tried to keep cool as the temperature in the city soared.

The heatwave is set to be fierce but brief, with forecasts indicating that the maximum temperature registered in Spain of 49 degrees (120 degrees), for now remains unbeaten.
