The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), which will be marking its 75th anniversary in 2023, is a key document which was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in Paris on 10 December 1948 as a common standard of achievements for all nations. The UDHR -- which has now been translated into over 500 languages -- played a crucial role in paving the way for the adoption of more than 70 human rights treaties that are applicable at global and regional levels, to this date. Noteworthily, the document clearly states that every individual is entitled to all the rights and freedoms enlisted in the declaration, without bias of any kind, including race, colour, sex, language, religion, political opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. The UDHR further clarifies that no distinction shall be made on the basis of the political, jurisdictional or international status of the country or territory to which a person belongs.

Serving as a global blueprint for laws and policies, the UDHR is a cornerstone of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
