British actress Barbara Windsor died on Thursday following a six-year battle with Alzheimer's Disease.

She was 83 years old.

Short of stature - she was just 1.47 metres tall - Windsor was a huge presence on screen, stage and film, famed for her raucous laugh and broad Cockney accent.

She shot to fame in the 1960s for her often risque roles in nine of the immensely popular 'Carry On' films.

Windsor again rose to prominence in the 1990s with her portrayal of publican Peggy Mitchell in the soap opera 'EastEnders.'
