Iraq Prime Minister confirms new operation against Islamic State group

Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi visited the headquarters of the Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF) on Saturday.

During the meeting, al-Kadhimi stressed that there would soon be a "massive military operation" to eliminate the Islamic State group (IS) forces from Iraqi soil.

This military campaign comes in response to recent attacks launched by IS on Iraqi forces and the PMF.

Some brigades, backed by Iran, operate under the umbrella of the Popular Mobilisation Forces, locally known as Al-Hashedal-Shaabi.

Iraq declared victory over IS forces in December 2017, after a three-year military campaign against it.
