Washington: A newly declassified JFK file has revealed that CIA operative Gary Underhill fled Washington in fear the day after President John F. Kennedy’s assassination, claiming that a small group within the CIA was responsible for Kennedy's death. Less than six months later, he was found dead in his Washington apartment with a gunshot wound behind his ear—an unusual location for suicide. Despite the suspicious circumstances, officials ruled his death a suicide.

The revelation comes as the US government has declassified thousands of documents related to Kennedy’s assassination, fulfilling a campaign promise by former President Donald Trump . The newly released records, now accessible through the National Archives, offer fresh insights into one of the most debated events in American history.

According to the files, Underhill arrived at a friend’s home in New Jersey late at night on November 23, 1963, visibly shaken. He reportedly said, "A small clique within the CIA was responsible for the assassination," and added that he feared for his life and might have to leave the country.

Less than six months later, he was found dead in his Washington apartment. The coroner ruled it a suicide, but the location of the gunshot wound—behind his ear—raised doubts about the official conclusion.

What’s in the Newly Released Files?

The declassified documents include:

- Reports from intelligence agencies involved in the assassination investigation.
- Administrative records from the Warren Commission.
- Transcripts, recordings, and photos related to the probe.

According to the National Archives, all previously classified assassination-related files are now public.

Trump had pledged to release approximately 80,000 pages of documents, and his administration claimed that all redacted materials would now be available. However, the extent of new revelations remains unclear.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the nephew of JFK, has long advocated for the full release of documents, believing the assassination involved a deeper conspiracy.

With more records being digitized, the newly released files are expected to fuel further debate about one of the most scrutinized events in U.S. history.
