Lam: Hong Kong will rebound from social unrest

Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam on Tuesday said the territory "will rebound" from an economic downturn attributed to months of anti-government protests.

Lam discussed her government's "livelihood improvement measures" which will see 10 billion Hong Kong dollars per year used to support disadvantaged and elderly people.

She said there should be "confidence" in Hong Kong as there were "opportunities" ahead, rather than any recession brought on by the unrest being used to hold back public spending.

The former British colony has been in the grip of pro-democracy protests, which began last June over a now-withdrawn extradition bill and morphed to encompass wider social issues.
