Libyan forces fighting the internationally-recognised Government of National Accord (GNA) said Sunday they welcomed Egypt's offer to intervene. Egypt said Saturday it was willing to step in to counter Turkish forces, who have sided with the Tripoli-based GNA against the eastern-based Libyan Arab Armed Forces (LAAF).

LAAF spokesman Ahmed Al-Mosmari praised Egypt for what he called its "strong message".

Egypt's offer to intervene raises the stakes still further in a conflict that's become a proxy war among a number of regional powers.

The GNA is supported by Turkey, Italy and Qatar.

The LAAF is backed not just by Egypt but also by Russia, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
