A series of mysterious assassinations has shaken Pakistan, targeting known terrorists mostly involved in anti-India activities. The latest incident involves Lashkar-e-Taiba's most wanted terrorist, Abu Qatal, also known as Zia-ur-Rehman, who was murdered in Pakistan on Saturday night. The incident has sparked widespread speculation, with hints from Pakistani security agencies suggesting the possible involvement of Indian agencies. The mysterious assassinations have raised questions about the safety of terrorists in Pakistan. These assassinations have not only raised security concerns but also had a big impact on the morale of the Pakistani military and intelligence agencies.
Abu Qatal was a key operative of Lashkar-e-Taiba, known for planning multiple attacks in Jammu and Kashmir. He was involved in the June 9 attack on a bus carrying pilgrims returning from the Shiv Khori temple in Jammu and Kashmir's Reasi district. The attack was orchestrated under Qatal's leadership, and it was Hafiz Saeed who appointed Abu Qatal as Lashkar's Chief Operational Commander.

As per reports, Abu Qatal was also involved in the Bhatta/Duria terror attack on April 20, 2023, in which five Army personnel were martyred and their bodies were mutilated. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) also named Abu Qatal in its chargesheet for his involvement in the 2023 Rajouri attack. On January 1, a terror attack targeted civilians in Rajouri's Dhangri village. The attack was followed by an IED blast the next day, resulting in the deaths of seven people, including two children.
According to sources, Abu Qatal was travelling with his security guard in the Jhelum area around 7 pm when unknown attackers opened fire. The assailants fired 15 to 20 rounds, killing Abu Qatal and one of his security guards on the spot. Another guard was critically injured. The attack took place near Zeenat Hotel, close to Dina Punjab University in the Jhelum area.
The killing took place, despite Abu Qatal's high security and heavy protection from the Pakistan Army, with both Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists and plainclothes Pakistani military personnel assigned to his security. Despite the security, unknown assailants were able to carry out the attack, raising questions about the security provided to Abu Qatal.
The series of mysterious assassinations, including that of Dawood Malik, a terrorist associated with wanted terrorist Maulana Masood Azhar, who was shot dead in North Waziristan by unidentified gunmen. Not only Malik, but the killing also followed the assassination of Shahid Latif, the mastermind behind the 2016 Pathankot terror attack in Pakistan's Sialkot.
