Seoul: At least two firefighters killed and as many as hundreds of civilians were evacuated from their homes in South Korea on Saturday as massive wildfires engulfed due to dry winds, and emergency workers struggled to extinguish the fire.
The most intense wildfires were in southeastern regions, particularly in Sancheong county, where 260 people sought refuge in a temporary shelter as flames spread across nearby hills, reported the South Gyeongsang provincial government.
Two firefighters have been confirmed dead, while another firefighter and a government worker are still missing after being trapped by rapidly spreading flames fueled by strong dry winds.
Rescuers managed to pull out five emergency workers, who are currently receiving treatment for their injuries, according to the provincial government.
As of Saturday evening, the Korea Forest Service reported that the Sancheong wildfire had scorched over 500 hectares (1,200 acres). Nearly 1,600 emergency workers, 35 helicopters, and numerous vehicles were deployed, but only 35% of the fire was contained due to the challenging mountainous terrain and strong winds.
More than 400 people were evacuated from their homes in Uiseong county, North Gyeongsang province, as firefighters battled a wildfire that has burned 300 hectares (740 acres), according to the forest service. Additionally, dozens of residents in Gimhae city also fled their homes.
The fires also led to the closure of several highway sections in southeastern South Korea, including one connecting Ulsan and Busan, the country’s second-largest city.
The South Korean government designated the North and South Gyeongsang provinces and the southeastern city of Ulsan as disaster zones, and the country’s acting president, Choi Sang-mok, vowed an all-out response to extinguish the flames. Wildfires were also reported in central Chungcheong and southwestern Jeolla provinces.
