Merkel: Green Deal is an EU core project

German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday called the European Union green deal a "core project" and a stimulus program that would lead the bloc into the future. She was speaking after EU leaders reached a hard-fought deal to cut the bloc's net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by the end of the decade compared with 1990 levels, avoiding a hugely embarrassing deadlock ahead of a U.N. climate meeting this weekend.
