Cyprus began its COVID-19 vaccination programme on Sunday with the first shots of the vaccine being administered to a pair of elderly residents at a nursing home in the capital Nicosia. The country is one of many European Union nations which kicked off a coordinated effort to give COVID-19 vaccinations to the most vulnerable among the bloc's nearly 450 million people.

At Nicosia Retirement Home one of the recipients, Andreas Raouna, said everyone in the country should be vaccinated so "we can destroy the coronavirus". Panayiota Loizou-Phylactou said she asked to be the first to get vaccinated because she wants her grandchildren to be able to come and see her again.

The 88 year-old said she hopes her son and daughter-in-law follow her example. The home's director Athos Matsas was also vaccinated. He said he hoped the action would send a message of trust to younger people to follow suit.
