Iraq: Protesters in Najaf demand governor's resignation

Protesters blocked a highway in Najaf on Sunday, demanding the resignation of the regional governor and his two deputies because of corruption.

The protest took place on the main roads leading to Luay al-Yasiri's office at the governorate building.

Plumes of black smoke rose from burning tyres being used as barricades in the street.

The protesters were confronted by security forces, who used sound bombs and hunting ammunition against them.

Several people were injured and taken to nearby hospitals.
