The capital of Montenegro fell silent late Monday as an overnight curfew came into force. The curfews were imposed in the capital Podgorica, and in the town of Zabljak, in a bid to curb a new surge in coronavirus cases.

Residents were banned from leaving their homes between 10pm in the evening and 5am in the morning. Most schools have been closed, although kindergartens remain open. The small Balkan nation has registered 23,608 coronavirus cases since the start of the pandemic and has recorded 342 deaths.
