Protesters scuffled with police during an Independence Day march in the Bulgarian capital Sofia on Tuesday.

The protesters had taken to the streets to renew their call for the resignation of prime minister Boyko Borisov and the country's chief prosecutor.

The demonstrators want them to step down over allegations of high-level corruption within the country.

The scuffles took place towards the end of the day of protests against the government.

Extra police were deployed for the protest after organizers said Tuesday’s gathering would turn into a new “great national uprising”.

Although previous rallies have been mostly peaceful, there have been occasional clashes with police and some arrests.
