Karachi's residents filled markets and stores ahead of Eid celebrations this week, in defiance of Pakistan's social distancing regulations.

Pakistan has been observing lockdown measures for almost two months, including social distancing and the closures of businesses and schools, in an attempt to curb the spread of the new coronavirus.

But this week thousands went shopping in preparation for festivities at the end of Ramadan, after restrictions on shopping centres and smaller shops were lifted earlier this week following a Supreme Court decision.

Shoppers entering markets and crowded areas were disinfected before entering, and signs ordered people to wear masks and practice social distancing.

Despite speculation that increased crowds could lead to a spike in new virus infections, business owners say the government should not bother customers intent on shopping.

Atiq Mir, head of the Karachi Business Community claims the lockdown has ruined the business in the city.

"The business has been begun operational in Karachi just only for four hours and it could be run through only for 10 days in this Eid season," Mir said.

Pakistan has confirmed 48,354 infections of the new virus, with 1,030 deaths.
