Paris streets quiet under first night of curfew

Streets in Paris stayed quiet on Saturday as the French capital entered its first night of a curfew aimed at stemming the flow of record new virus infections. The new COVID-19 virus restrictions began at midnight on October 17 and will see a curfew imposted between 9pm and 6am local time.

The measure will apply to Paris and eight other regions: Grenoble, Lille, Lyon, Aix-Marseille, Toulouse, Montpellier, Saint-Etienne. President Emmanuel Macron said that the curfew, on around 20 million people, would be in place until at least December 1.

France registered more than 30,000 virus cases Thursday, its highest single-day jump since the pandemic began and nearly 200 cases per 100,000 people over the past week.
