Thousands of Peruvians marched through the streets of Lima on Saturday in favour of right-wing presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori in a demonstration dubbed "for democracy and peace". They wore jerseys of the Peruvian soccer team and shouted: "No to communism."

Demonstrators carried white banners with the letter "k", Fujimori's symbol. Others, like Luis Solis, said that their presence at the march was not in support of Fujimori but a march against communism and terrorism. Some demonstrators have claimed, without proof, that Free Peru party presidential candidate, Pedro Castillo has links with the terrorist group Shining Path, also calling him a "communist".

The leftist candidate has denied any links. All polls show Castillo in first place, but closely followed by Fujimori, for whom the Public Prosecutor's Office is pushing a 30-year prison sentence for allegedly leading a criminal group and laundering assets. Peru's presidential elections will be held next Sunday, June 6. Whoever accumulates the most votes will govern from July 28.
