Pope Francis will be discharged from Rome’s Gemelli hospital on Sunday after a five-week stay due to double pneumonia, doctors confirmed.

The 88-year-old pontiff was admitted on February 14 after experiencing severe respiratory issues. According to Dr. Sergio Alfieri, one of the physicians treating him, the Pope faced “two very critical episodes” where his life was at risk. Despite the severity of his condition, he was never intubated and remained conscious throughout his hospitalization.

“Today we are happy to say that tomorrow he will be at home,” Dr. Alfieri told reporters on Saturday.

Gradual recovery and continued rest

The Vatican reported on Friday that the Pope’s breathing and mobility had improved. While he no longer requires mechanical ventilation at night, he still receives oxygen through a nasal tube and continues to use less high-flow oxygen during the day.

Upon his return to the Vatican, Pope Francis will need at least two months of rest to fully recover, doctors have advised.

Limited public appearances

Since his hospitalization, Pope Francis has only been seen by the public once, in a photograph released last week showing him praying in a hospital chapel. Earlier this month, an audio message recorded in his native Spanish was played in St. Peter’s Square, where he thanked the Catholic faithful for their prayers. His voice sounded breathless, reflecting his ongoing recovery.

Health challenges over the years

Pope Francis has served as the leader of the Roman Catholic Church for nearly 12 years and has faced multiple health issues throughout his life. At the age of 21, he had part of his lung removed, making him more vulnerable to respiratory infections.

As he prepares to leave the hospital, Vatican officials and the faithful remain hopeful for his continued recovery.
