U.S. President Donald Trump has described the war in Ukraine as “somewhat under control” and insisted that he alone could stop Russian President Vladimir Putin. Speaking to sports website Outkick aboard Air Force One, Trump expressed concern that the conflict could escalate into a global war.

“I’d like to see if we could stop the soldiers being killed – even though they’re not American soldiers – although it could – a thing like that, could lead to World War III,” he said.

‘I Have a good relationship with Putin and Zelenskyy’

Trump emphasized his ties with both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“I have a good relationship with President Putin and, actually, a good relationship with President Zelenskyy too,” he stated. “It’d be a great thing to be able to stop it. And I will say this, nobody else would have been able to.”

The American president also added that his discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin had been “rational” and suggested that he was the only leader capable of stopping him.

“I don’t think there’s anybody in the world that’s going to stop [Putin], except me, and I think I’m going to be able to stop him,” he said.

Concern over casualties

Trump also pointed to the human cost of the war, saying that thousands of young people were dying each week.

“They’re losing 2,500 young kids a week, and they’re Russian and they’re Ukrainian,” he said.

Trump has frequently criticized the Biden administration’s handling of the war and has suggested that the conflict would not have happened under his leadership.
