Refugees and migrants clashed with police on the Greek island of Lesbos on Monday during a protest over severe overcrowding at the local Moria camp and delays in the country's asylum procedure.

Riot police faced up against several hundred protesters who had planned to march from a refugee camp to the capital Mytilene, about 5 kilometres (3.1 miles) to the south.

Many of the migrants cut through fields to avoid police barricades blocking the road to Mytilene.

Police reported no arrests or injuries.

Notis Mitarakis, the Greek minister for migration, said the clashes underscored the need to proceed with reforms promised by his centre-right government that include creating detention centres for migrants whose asylum applications have been rejected.
