In what can be termed as a "Surprise pregnancy",  an Australian model did not know she was pregnant until she had the baby. Medical professionals refer to this phenomenon as "denied pregnancies". Erin Langmaid, 23, said she knew something was wrong and realized that she was pregnant a mere 10 minutes before having the baby on the bathroom floor.

Denied Pregnancies show no telltale signs

In her social media posts, the 23-year old model is seen smiling and surprisingly shows no sign of visible changes to her body. She was later quoted talking to an Australian media and claiming that she had no baby bump and no morning sickness. According to Erin, all her clothes fit her perfectly leading up to the baby's birth.

A week after the birth, Erin updated thousands of her followers with a photo of herself with the baby and her partner, She later added that it was the hardest week of her life. The phenomenon that Erin seems to have undergone is a rare but well-established occurrence also known as "stealth" or "cryptic" pregnancy as known to experts and medical professionals. Studies suggest that 1 in about 2,500 women fail to realize that they have been carrying a child until they go into sudden labour. Since the occurrence is somewhat rare, more research is required on the phenomenon and some medical practitioners continue to puzzle over the question of "stealth pregnancies".

Langmaid's case is "difficult to fathom," especially given her body type. But it's not outside the realm of possibility", said Christine Greaves who is a Florida based OB/GYN. "Another story that just goes to show how amazing and resilient the human body is", added Christine. According to the parents, although the labour was over in minutes but the birth was still a very harrowing experience for the mother.

The emergency call that was reviewed by news agencies aptly portrays the shock the young parents must have been feeling. The emergency operator can be heard asking the father how many weeks the girl was pregnant and him replying that they were wholly unaware that the mother was pregnant at all. Erin was quoted saying that the little weight she thought she had put on was just a little Christman's winter weight and that she never expected to be pregnant.
