64 infected with coronavirus at nursing home in Drzewica

A medical worker at a nursing home in central Poland has reportedly raised the alarm after 64 cases of coronavirus were detected among 131 patients and caregivers.

A medical worker at a nursing home in central Poland has reportedly raised the alarm after 64 cases of coronavirus were detected among 131 patients and caregivers.

Local authorities say the situation is under control in the nursing home that is located in Drzewica, Lodz province.

But the president of the Polish Nursing Society said one of the nurses called her to say she cannot handle the amount of work.

"She is psychologically stressed beyond limits. She is responsible for too many patients. She has been locked in the facility since Saturday," said Grazyna Wojcik.

After the evacuation of the most serious cases, 77 patients and 15 staff members were left on the premises.

At least 136 people have died due to the outbreak in Poland.

Local authorities across the country have warned of a critical situation at nursing homes due to coronavirus pandemic.

Most facilities are coping with shortages of equipment and personnel.

In total there are 80,000 people in nursing homes in Poland.
