Greece has put a migrant facility outside Athens on lockdown for 14 days after a 53-year-old Afghan man developed coronavirus symptoms on Saturday afternoon, according to authorities.

The man has been taken to an Athens hospital and is under full medical evaluation, authorities said, without further specifying the seriousness of his condition.

The lockdown began Sunday morning.

Around 2,500 migrants were living in the camp in Malakasa, known as an "open" one in official parlance, meaning the migrants there could leave and enter as they wished.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks.

For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and can lead to death.
