An attacker on November 6 allegedly stabbed eight people including four foreign tourists and their tour guide at a famous archaeological site in northern Jordan

An assailant on November 6, allegedly stabbed eight people including three foreign tourists and their tour guide at a famous archaeological site in northern Jordan, according to the state-run media. The shocking incident took place in Jerash, one of the country's top tourist destinations. A security official on the condition of anonymity said that the wounded included three Mexican tourists and a Swiss woman. Three other Jordanians and a policeman were also hurt before the attacker was brought under control and arrested, according to the reports.

Two people are in critical condition: Authorities

The conditions of the victims were not immediately known but a local news agency reported that two people are in critical condition and were airlifted to a hospital in the capital city, Amman by helicopter. Jerash is situated around 60 kilometres north of the capital. An amateur video from the scene showed bloodbath next to the Jerash archaeological site, which is an ancient city whose ruins include a Roman amphitheatre and a columned road. In the video, a woman can be seen lying on the ground with full of blood around her as someone presses a towel to her back.

Jordan's economy is based on tourism

In one video a woman can be heard screaming in Spanish to help the person who has been attacked with a knife. Another man can be seen sitting on the ground with his leg wound.No immediate details have been found on the identity of the attacker and his intentions. The economy of Jordan is basically dependent on the tourism industry and the Islamist state militant groups have earlier targetted the tourist hotspots. An attack by the Islamist state group killed 14 people in 2016 including a Canadian tourist. The tourism industry has seen huge growth in the past two years.
