Speaker Nancy Pelosi led a bipartisan Congressional delegation to Jordan to meet with King Abdullah II along with top officials of the United States on October 20. The matters discussed included ensuring stability in the Middle East region and developing bilateral security cooperation with Jordan king along with appreciating the partnership that both the countries shared along with other common challenges.

“This evening, our bipartisan delegation was honored to meet with His Majesty King Abdullah II, Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II, Prince Feisal bin Al Hussein, Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and senior Jordanian officials,” Speaker Pelosi said.  “We expressed our continued appreciation for the strategic partnership between the U.S. and Jordan and engaged in a constructive dialogue on regional stability, counterterrorism, security cooperation, Middle East peace, economic development and other shared challenges.”

'Critical time for security'

According to Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the visit of the US Congress delegation to visit Jordan is also at a “critical time for the scrutiny and stability of the region”. Pelosi believes that her delegation engaged in vital discussions about the increased flow of refugees, the dangerous opening that has been provided to the Islamic State, Iran along with Russia while the situation in Turkey and Syria has increased crisis with the Turkish offensive in northeastern Syria.

'Deep gratitude'

In addition to that, at the US Embassy in Amman which received a status of a US major non-NATO ally in 1996, the delegation also received a detailed briefing by Chargé d’Affaires Karen Sasahara, along with other senior diplomats and military officials. The US Congressional officials also had the opportunity to thank the members of the US Marine detachment. Other members of the delegation included Ranking member Mac Thornberry, Chairman Eliot Engel, Chairman Bennie Thompson, Chairman Adam Schiff, Congressman Ron Kind, Congresswoman Susan Davis, Congressman Stephen Lynch, and Congresswoman Elaine Luria. 

“As ever, we bring the deep gratitude of the U.S. Congress and the American people to the brave men and women serving our country overseas,” said Speaker Pelosi.
