Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said an unused mining camp near Darwin was being prepared to quarantine evacuees from Wuhan, the Chinese city at the centre of the virus outbreak.

Morrison told journalists on Friday that plans were being finalised to send a second charter flight to the virus stricken city to evacuate Australian citizens and permanent residents.

He said Australia's detention centre on Christmas Island is unable to accommodate more people.

Almost 300 people remain in quarantine on Christmas Island, which lies in the Indian Ocean.

Northern Territory's Chief Minister said the evacuees taken to Darwin won't include anyone showing signs of infection.
