Units from Azerbaijan's army entered the Kalbajar region on Wednesday, according to the Azerbaijan Defence Ministry. Footage distributed by the ministry showed sappers clearing the area of possible mines.
In a statement, the ministry said engineering works and demining was completed ahead of the arrival of troops to ensure their safety.
The handover of the Kalbajar region follows a cease-fire agreement which ended weeks of fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh between ethnic Armenian and Azerbaijan forces.
Kalbajar is the second region to be transferred to Azerbaijani control.

The truce, brokered by Russia, stipulated that Armenia hand over control of some areas it holds outside Nagorno-Karabakh's borders to Azerbaijan including the regions of Kalbajar, Aghdam and Lachin.
