The beluga whale that became an internet sensation after playing fetch with a couple near the Artic pole might have escaped from a Russian military spy programme. According to the researchers the whale is believed to be a lost spy animal trained by the Russian Navy. The giant animal is reported to be Hvalimir and was first reportedly discovered near northern Norway with a harness attached to his body and a label that said 'Equipment of Saint Petersburg'.

A researcher of aquatic animal and a zoologist believe that the video that went viral on social media is that of Hvaldimir who was once a captive whale and has probably escaped a Russian military programme. The Norwegian Institute of Marine Research and the Hvaldimir Foundation have however not yet confirmed or verified the rumour. According to international media reports the whale has been known to go up to boats to ask for food and play fetch. Earlier this year another video probably showed the gigantic mammal came in rescue of clumsy traveller who had lost all hope to get her phone back, amazingly, the beluga whale took to the initiative and brought back her phone to the surface in its mouth.
