Hundreds of people in cars drove through Rio de Janeiro on Saturday to demand the impeachment of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro over his handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

Similar protests took place in several major cities across the country.

The convoy wound its way past key landmarks such as the Maracana football stadium and Sugar Loaf Mountain.

Protesters blame Bolsonaro for the resurgence in cases that's seen Brazil's death toll soar past 400,000, the second highest in the world.

The Brazilian president, who contracted the virus in July, has long resisted calls to impose widespread restrictions, arguing that the impact of a lockdown would be worse than the virus itself.

Protesters are also accusing the federal government of mismanagement in the import and distribution of vaccines, and the oxygen crisis that has affected patients' treatment in the Amazonian capital city of Manaus.
