Hong Kong activist Chow Hang Tung was released from police detention on Saturday, a day after her arrest.

As she walked out of the police station, Chow, the Vice Chairperson of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, said her arrest was obviously "groundless".

Chow said authorities were using the Public Order Ordinance to "frighten people" and to deter them from "speaking out".

On Friday, police said that they arrested a 36-year-old woman from the Hong Kong Alliance as she was publicizing an unauthorized assembly via social media despite the police ban on an annual candlelight vigil to commemorate the deadly 1989 crackdown.

After the ban was issued, Chow asked people to commemorate the event privately by lighting candles wherever they are.

Although she could not light a candle while she was in police detention, Chow told reporters that she fasted for a day in commemoration of the anniversary of the crackdown.
