Chilean police deployed a water cannon in Santiago on Wednesday to disperse protesters who held a rally calling on the country's government to release prisoners who have been detained for protesting constitutional change.

The demonstrators also called for the resignation of President Sebastian Pinera during the protest in the Chilean capital.

At least one protester was arrested by police officers during the demonstration.

As a result of protests which began in October 2019, Chile held a plebiscite in which an overwhelming majority voted in favour of replacing the 1980 Constitution inherited from the Augusto Pinochet dictatorship (1973-1990).
