China on Wednesday denounced a people's tribunal in Britain on allegations of genocide against Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslim people and claimed that the evidence and witness testimonies presented at the hearings were false. During the tribunal hearings which opened in London on Friday, witnesses said that inmates at detention camps for Uyghurs were routinely humiliated, tortured and abused.
In response, the Chinese government organized a news conference where relatives and acquaintances of tribunal witnesses were called upon, speaking out against the witnesses. The tribunal does not have UK government backing and has no powers to sanction or punish China. Beijing flatly rejects the allegations and says the Xinjiang camps were vocational training centers and has stepped up denials of abuses by using videos of Uyghurs denouncing the allegations.
