Renewed anti-government demonstrations gripped Baghdad on Monday. They followed protests a day earlier in which at least 27 people were injured.

Protesters are demanding an end to Iraq's sectarian political system, alongside early elections and the stepping aside of its ruling elite.

The uprising began on 1 October when thousands of Iraqis took to the streets to decry rampant government corruption, poor public services and a scarcity of jobs.

The latest demonstrations mark a resurgence for the protest movement after it lost steam in recent weeks, following a spike in tensions between neighbouring Iran and the United States.
