Clashes between protesters and anti-riot police broke out Tuesday in Peru's capital Lima after Manuel Merino was sworn n as president.

Demonstrators tried to take their protest to the doors of Cngress where the ceremony was taking place.

Police surrounded the immediate area around the presidential palace and congress and stopped protesters by firing teargas, pellets and delivering blows with batons.

The ousting of popular president Martin Vizcarra, who had campaigned against corruption, was met with anger.

Some protesters carried posters reading "Merino is not my president."

A September Ipsos poll found that 72% of Peruvians polled in urban areas disapproved of Merino, the then-chief of Congress.

By contrast, 79% said they thought Vizcarra should continue in office.

The protesters describe the dismissal as a "coup in disguise" and promise to keep protesting around the country.
