Not only a Motion of Reprobation, but a public resignation and trial against Diego Molano, who is one of the most responsible for the murdered people, women being raped, of those massacred, violated and mutilated by the anti-riot police and national police."

Demonstrators protested outside the Colombian Senate on Monday, demanding the representatives dismiss and put on trial Defence Minister Diego Molano, arguing that dozens of people were killed in anti-government protests.

Molano was scheduled to appear before the Senate on Monday, as he faced a Motion of Reprobation. He is further set to appear in Congress on Tuesday.

The protests started in late April after President Ivan Duque proposed a plan to increase taxes that would have affected millions of people whose incomes have decreased during the pandemic.

They have since turned into a general outcry against growing poverty and inequality in Colombia, where the unemployment rate doubled last year.

The demonstrations have included dozens of marches through large cities that have sometimes been met with police violence.

In some parts of Colombia, protesters have also organized roadblocks that have recently led to fuel shortages, increased the prices of food, and forced some factories to shut down.

Human rights groups such as Human Rights Watch say that the death toll since the protests began has risen to 55 and that in at least 15 cases, the alleged aggressors were police.

The Defence Ministry said last week that 15 civilians had died amid the protests and 11 more cases were being verified.
