Stark video shot in a hospital in Myanmar on Wednesday night shows grieving relatives collecting the blood-soaked bodies of family members shot dead by security forces in Yangon, after the worst day of violence since the coup a month ago.

The UN special envoy for Myanmar, Christine Schraner Burgener, said 38 people had been killed across the country on Wednesday, a figure consistent with other reports though accounts are difficult to confirm.

The video was shot at North Okkalapa Hospital, which serves an area of Yangon which reports suggested saw the heaviest death toll on Wednesday, with police opening fire on crowds with live ammunition.

Some relatives sobbed uncontrollably, while others looked in shock at the scene around them.

The increasingly deadly violence could galvanize the international community, which has responded fitfully so far.
