Cape Town - the South African prime tourist destination - is as much a victim of the coronavirus lockdown as the rest of the country.

Tourist sites like Table Mountain and the interior winelands are empty.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced a 21-day national lockdown starting March 26 and ending April 16.

Restrictions include no pet walking, no outdoor physical exercise, no going to the beaches and all public gatherings of more than 50 people have been banned.

The impact on tourism, finance and manufacturing has been devastating.

The country has Africa’s largest number of confirmed cases with more than 1,700.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough, that clear up in two to three weeks.

For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and could lead to death.
