Dubai streets empty during virus lockdown

The streets and pavements of Dubai were nearing empty on Sunday as the country entered day one of a two-week lockdown in an attempt to slow the spread of the new coronavirus.

Dubai's main highway was considerably less congested at rush hour on Sunday, but dozens of cars were still passing by despite a 24-hour lockdown imposed by the government.

Meanwhile Dubai Creek, usually bustling with fishing boats, tourist shows and water taxis, remained still on Sunday with only a few fishermen around.

The lockdown announcement came on Saturday night, with the Emirate of the United Arab Emirates extending the nightly curfew to a 24-hour one.

The city-state's Dubai Media Office also said in a statement that extensive medical tests will be conducted across densely populated areas of Dubai.

Exemptions for certain industries have been offered for during the lockdown, but authorities said those leaving their homes were required to wear both masks and gloves, and that anyone violating the restrictions will face stringent legal action.

United Arab Emirates currently has 1,505 cases of the new virus, with 10 deaths.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks.

For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.

The vast majority of people recover.
